A very important aspect of the job search is to be sure that the job you are considering matches up with your personality and lifestyle. Just because your qualifications match up with the job description it doesn’t mean that is the best job for you. If you are an outgoing person and enjoy interaction with people working in a small office with limited people contact is not in your best interest. If you coach or play basketball on Tuesday and Thursday evenings on a weekly basis you should inquire about the overtime requirements. If you are a person that wants to find the life/career balance to keep you happy it will require some research on the companies you are interested in working for. The little bit of extra effort will pay of in the long run. Make a list of what’s important to you and check the list often to keep you on track. List your hobbies, interests, and personality and compare your needs to what the position will require of you.
Some sample questions to consider:
- What type of work do you plan to do in the future and will this position give you an opportunity to do so?
- Does the company promote from within?
- What are this company’s plan for growth?
- What credentials do most of the employees have?
- Will advancement require additional degrees such as an MBA?
- Will the company pay part or all of your continued education?
- Does the company offer a 401k and match a percentage of your contribution?
- Will you need health insurance?
- Will you have flexibility in your schedule?
This is just a short list of possibilities. Everyone has different needs and requirements. It’s worth taking the time to consider what’s important to you and what will make you happy. If you want a job that you will enjoy and stay with for a long time do the research. It will be worth it.
